The Dynaweb Interface

In frames mode, the Dynaweb interface appears in the browser as 3 frames.

The Table of Contents Frame on the top left may contain a list of items or groups, or the table of contents of an individual document.

The Contents Frame on the top right may contain a list of items or groups, or the contents of an individual document.

The Button Bar in the bottom frame is used for control of Dynaweb and navigation through its electronic collections. The Button Bar Map contains provides a guide to the functions of each button on the button bar.

In Non-Frames Mode, the Button Bar is located at the top of each page with either Table of Contents or Content information below.

Dynaweb Structure

Dynaweb publishing software from INSO allows users to browse and search across documents maintained in SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Lanuguage) and translated on-the-fly to HTML for web browsers. Because it is intended for document publishing, Dynaweb uses the convention of the electronic "book" and "collection" as a basic organizing principle. Dynaweb electronic "books" and "collections" should not be confused with actual books or archival collections which reside in the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library at Duke University.

Dynaweb electronic books are grouped into collections in the same manner that files are grouped into folders on a PC or Mac. The arrangement is hierarchial in nature:

In the Digital Scriptorium's Dynaweb Setup, the top level of the hierarchy is the "Main Contents" Menu which appears in the Table of Contents Frame on the main starting point of the Dynaweb Server. You may enter Dynaweb at another level of the hierarchy by following links from other pages.

An electronic book in Dynaweb corresponds to an individual SGML document. Sometimes the documents are designed to be browsable within dynaweb. Other documents are large databases or lists which are designed to be accessed by searching. Each Dynaweb collection on the Digital Scriptorium Dynaweb Internet Server contains a link to a homepage which contains information on how best to use that electronic resource.
