This article from the Negro Digest was part of a series written by
prominent Americans about career opportunities for young African Americans.
Still's article was the third of the series. The second was written by George
S. Schuyler, and was about a career in journalism. The fourth article, by
A. Philip Randolph, was about labor. Very surprisingly, the first article (on
law enforcement) was by the only white American, J. Edgar Hoover, the
director of the F.B.I. Still gives a brief biography of his life up to this
time and outlines the problems of racism and what would be expected from young
African Americans if they chose to enter the field of concert music.
