Carl Van Vechten, (b. June 17, 1880, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, - d. Dec. 21,
1964, New York City), novelist, and music and drama critic, the author
of Nigger Heaven, was an active participant and influential
figure in the Harlem Renaissance. A great deal of his time and energy
went to fighting racism and prejudice. In this letter to Verna, he
explains how his two collections at Yale and Fisk can help build
bridges between the two races.
