Following his discharge from the Navy in 1919, Still returned to
Oberlin for a short time, after which he moved to New York. There, he
began to work for W.C. Handy by playing in his new band and arranging
music for the Pace & Handy Music Company. Still first met Handy
in Memphis during the spring of 1916 and began to do some arranging
for Handy at that time (for example, "St. Louis Blues," for military
band).
